South Maui Turtle Town Kayak Tour

Launching kayaks from historic Makena Landing in the center of Turtle Town you’ll have iconic Haleakala in the background. With dozens of independent reefs throughout Turtle Town, your kayak guide will lead you away from the crowds to snorkel with green Hawaiian Sea Turtles. This South Maui location includes some reefs with underwater caves and arches commonly known as “Five Caves” and “Turtle Arches.” These reefs and many others in Turtle Town have resident sea turtles who can be found year round if you know exactly where to look and our guides will lead you there. Our certified marine naturalist guides will share sea turtle facts as you paddle out to swim with sea turtles. When you kayak along the Makena and Wailea coast you’ll enjoy scenic views of Puu Olai, Molokini Crater, Lanai, Mauna Kahalawai (West Maui Mountains) and Kahoolawe. During Maui’s windy summer months, Turtle Town is usually protected from the wind in early mornings making this the ideal summer location. Shallow, well-lit reefs and calm conditions make this a great location for families with small children and first-time ocean enthusiasts, but don’t let that deter you if you’re an active traveler, Turtle Town offers something for everyone!

“Another amazing experience”

This is our second time doing the kayak/snorkel/whale watch tour from Makena Landing, the last being in 2016. On the first trip, we had a whale breach just yards from the kayak! We were not expecting to get that close again but guess what………….another whale close encounter! A whale surfaced about 20 feet from me!!! I can’t say enough good things about this company.

Curtis was our guide. He was on time, ready to go and super informative. Like the last tour, he said that our time could be spent doing any combination of kayaking, whale watching and snorkeling and we could dictate as we went. Sadly for me I sometimes suffer from motion sickness and Curtis was on top of it making sure I was feeling okay as we paddled. I wanted to sit and watch for whales but the sitting did affect me and I was ready to paddle back in. I was not feeling well enough to snorkel and Curtis comforted me, letting me know how common it is. He was just really caring and made sure we had a blast even if we didn’t get to do the snorkel piece. He is also a font of information about kayaking and whales! Don’t hesitate here, these guys will take amazing care of you.

West Maui Coral Gardens Kayak Tour

After a water safety and paddling orientation we depart from Olowalu Beach under the backdrop of Mauna Kahalawai (West Maui Mountains). As your guide navigates you through the shallow coral gardens you won’t help but notice the vivid reef structures everywhere you look. This shallow water playground opens to slightly deeper water where your guide leads you to a ‘turtle cleaning station’ with an abundance of turtles and marine life. The shallow, sandy bottoms with patches of vibrant coral make this a favorite snorkel spot for visitors to Maui. Enjoy interesting facts about sea turtles as your certified marine naturalist guide leads you out to snorkel with sea turtles. Due to the sometimes windy conditions, this tour is best for older children and adults who are comfortable in the ocean.

“Vacation”

We meet with our guide Dan and he gave us a tutorial on reef safe sunscreen, types of fish we would likely see and water safety. The water is so clear!! We could see the bottom for a long way off shore. We kayaked for a long distance and sit there taking in the beauty of the ocean between Maui and Lanai. Then we hear this eerie sound and then cow-like sound. We sat the mesmerized by this magical moment that will be forever engrained in our brains. Dan said it sounded like a Humpback Whale was under us. He put on snorkel gear and saw outline of the whale under us. He took pictures and video. We saw several whales breech, blowhole and fluke. Dan thanked the whales and they sang again. Then we headed back to the reef. Dan then spotted several Black Tip Reef Sharks but they quickly swam away. The Dan excitedly pointed out a Hawaiian Monk Seal resting on a reef. What an awesome day!! The water and island views are breathtaking! Dan is awesome and informative! He taught me several types of fish that I could identify throughout our stay. If you are considering this trip…DO IT!!!

“Wow”

Wow what a fun adventure we had with Emily today! This was our first time kayaking in the ocean, and it was amazing! We saw many fish, an eel, and sea turtles! A perfect way to spend our 6 year wedding anniversary. I especially enjoyed that they take photos for you (and of you!) so you can just have fun instead of worrying about capturing it all. Emily was our guide and she was incredibly great to spend time with. She knew a lot about the fish and the ocean too. I was a little scared about going out since it was first time braving the waves in a kayak but she made me feel super safe and comfortable. It was easy! We highly recommended going out in the small group of just you and the guide, incredible and worth the $$$. We’ll be back for whale season. We had such a fun day, mahalo from Dayna and Gary!

South Maui SUP Lesson / Tour

Stand Up Paddle Boarding from Makena on Maui’s sunny south shore, commonly referred to as Turtle Town, you’ll have the beautiful back drop of Haleakala. On normal trade wind days South Maui is blocked from the wind in the early mornings making it an ideal location for SUP lessons. Even if the winds do start to blow, Makena Bay is generally protected allowing us to tuck inside away from the wind. As you glide across the glassy calm waters you’ll enjoy stunning views of Molokini Crater, Pu`u Olai, Kahoolawe, Lana`i and Mauna Kahalawai or the West Maui Mountains as we commonly refer to them today. But don’t forget to look down! While stand up paddle boarding, Maui reef structure below amazes you with green Hawaiian sea turtles and tropical fish on a clear day. Enjoy your instructor’s sea turtle facts while observing from your board. Although this location is closest to our guests staying in Makena, Wailea, Kihei, and Maalaea check with our management team for current weather conditions to determine the ideal location for your Stand up Paddle Boarding Lesson. Makena Landing is generally perfect for families and first time stand up paddle boarders.

“ Couldn’t have asked for a better SUP tour!

Booked a Makena SUP tour with HPS and they called me to reschedule for the next day due to windy conditions, which I’m so glad they did as it would not have been fun to SUP that day! The next day we enjoyed clear, calm waters and I had a great paddle with Colby. I have done a fair amount of paddling before so we were able to hit the water fairly quickly and were able to paddle north over the lave tubes (5 caves/5graves), past Po’oalenalena beach and then back closer to the shore and around the makena landing area. Beautiful views of the ocean, coastline and also Haleakala as it was very clear, and we saw 3 turtles! Colby was very friendly, helpful and informative, he and the other guides seemed to be the best of the best. I also love that HPS cares about the environment and incorporates that into their work. I couldn’t have asked for a better SUP experience! Would highly recommend!!

West Maui SUP Tour / Lesson

During the winter months, when Maui experiences lighter winds, Olowalu is a great location for a Stand Up Paddle Board Lesson. Paddle over the shallow reef structure teeming with tropical fish and green Hawaiian sea turtles while enjoying the stunning backdrop of Olowalu and Ukumehame Valleys. Your instructor will share interesting facts about the types of sea turtles, tropical fish and seals seen nowhere else on Earth. Looking around you will see Haleakala, Molokini Crater and all the islands of Maui Nui: Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai. You will even see the Big Island of Hawaii on a clear day! This is a great SUP lesson location when the weather is good but challenging if the winds are blowing too strong or from the wrong direction. This is the closest location for those guests staying in Lahaina and Kaanapali but check with our management team to see if Olowalu would be a good choice for your groups Stand Up Paddle Boarding Lesson based on weather and experience.

SUP with Danielle!

My husband and I booked a SUP tour for our 2 year anniversary. This was my first time and Danielle was an amazing guide! My husband has done this before and so while I was falling in the ocean (I probably fell 10 times) he was doing figure 8s around me 🙂

Danielle was super helpful and encouraging and I did eventually get the hang of it! We paddled out towards Molokini to watch the whales. We also spotted flying fish and several honu. This was a really fun workout and a beautiful new way to experience Maui. Danielle, you are awesome – thank you for making our anniversary even more special.
